Every Day I Wait is an exploration into the nature of performance, unmasking the illusion of transcendence associated with ballet. It tests the relationship between image and representation, asking how the figure in the image can convey the lived experience, or not. There is a dichotomy between the appearance of the ballet dancer and the physical effort required to achieve the illusion of weightlessness. The dancer is Lisa Bolte, principal with The Australian Ballet.
Every Day I Wait #1 (2010) is a site-specific video with five-channel audio, and a series of digital archival prints. It was shown at Arc One Gallery, Melbourne; in Black Box White Cube: Aspects of Performance in Contemporary Australian Art at Arts Centre Melbourne in 2011; and in Video & Photography, Conny Dietzschold Gallery, Sydney, in 2012.
Every Day I Wait #2 (2018) was a three-channel video and audio commission for the Museum of Brisbane, made to engage children physically in a gallery. It accompanied the exhibition Mao’s Last Dancer. With thanks to Simeon Taylor, Deakin Motion Lab, Deakin University, and to Clocked Out for sharing their original compositions for the project.
